Hello, my name is Myrdin Vimes and the pitch I'm going to give to you today is my very own take of Power Rangers called Shining Phoenix Force.
"Phoenix Rising!!"
—Morphing call
As a teenager growing up I recall getting into Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I was among of the many kids of the 90's that would watch that show religiously. With the larger than life monsters and larger than life characters.
While Mighty Morphin was the hook it was In Space that really sealed me as a Power Rangers fan. What I liked about Power Rangers In Space was the broader scale it brought. It was more than just monsters fighting in a small city. In Space was the series that expanded the Power Rangers universe as a whole and shows Power Rangers on a more cosmic scale.
The Concept
Shining Phoenix Force is going to be more grander in scale when compared to the original series. Instead of the rangers fighting a monster in a city I'd like to see them fight in different environments. Like from planet to planet or perhaps even in another universe to really drive just how high the stakes Shining Phoenix Force will be.
The Tone
Its Star Wars but with a Jim Butcher level of snark and Terry Pratchett level of taking what you'd think you know about Power Rangers but flip them into something that is unique. With a touch of Greg Weisman.
Like with Star Wars, the original trilogy, it will have a balance between light and dark elements that would keep the trilogy from being too comical and too dark to where you just don't give a shit what happens with the characters. For instance when shit gets real in Shining Phoenix Force that is when the heroes put their game faces on. Sure there will be some degree of snarking going on but with survival at stake its no time for jokes. And its, in essence, a fairy tale but in science fiction form.
The villains in this will be broadened a bit. This wont be the sympathy for the devil kind of villains that you usually see. Villains with a degree of depth to em yes but at the end of the day they need to be taken down. The villains in this isn't exactly an evil empire as they consider themselves beyond good and evil. In fact it is the good and evil morality that inspired The Black Sun Federation in going forward with their act cause in their view the multiverse deserves to be wiped out and renewed and nothing is going to sway them from accomplishing their goal.
The Arc
The first movie would have a putting the band together feel of it where the veteran Ranger, Gabriel Lawless, would gather a group of Power Rangers to fight the Black Sun Federation. Some would do it for different reasons. Some for justice, others for revenge, some for survival, others for redemption but no matter what reasons there are they all have a common enemy that needs to be defeated.
The Stakes
If there is anything I love about Mass Effect its that the series evolve due to the choices a character makes. Whatever choice a character make impact future installments of the series. So in a way this would be my anti-MCU in Power Rangers forum where the consequences wont be glossed over cause they play a part in the story one way or another.
Another factor I'll explore is the nobody is safe factor. With Power Rangers you don't always get a sense of tension because at the end of the day the good guys will be fine. However I remember when they killed the Pink Ranger in Lost Galaxy that was a real jaw hitting the floor moment. Yet the important element of what makes a great hero is overcoming obstacles and tragedy
Which honestly drives the theme of the series home. No matter what horrible tragedy or obstacle gets them down, like a Phoenix they will rise back up.
